Triage codes

There are 5 triage categories that are used in the Emergency department .Triaging aims to ensure patients are treated in the order of their clinical urgency. It is not synonymous with severity. Triage also allows for the allocation of the patient to the most appropriate assessment and treatment area.

Clinical staff

The Department is fully staffed 24 hours a day ,seven days a week by Specialists in Emergency Medicine and senior trainees in Emergency medicine. In addition there are Clinical Nurse specialists who manage minor injuries and illness.

You will be initially assessed and depending on your illness may have further  investigations and treatment done in the Emergency department. If you need admission you will be referred to an inpatient team for further management.

The department has access to a number of other services including social workers, physiotherapists and psychiatric nurses to assist in your care.

Interpreters

Interpreting services can be organised for people who are deaf or do not speak English as their first language. Please advise the nurse or clinical staff if you require this service.
Security

The department has a zero violence policy to ensure safety of visitors and patients.

Discharge

When you are discharged from the department you will be provided with a discharge letter and prescription (if required). Occasionally patients may need to be transferred to the transition lounge on Level 5 at the time of discharge.
